Torontonian Alyssa Garrison’s blog, Random Acts of Pastel, is a candy-coloured wonderland of gorgeous outfits, pastel hair and great beauty product reviews. Random Acts of Pastel has garnered so much attention that it was recently named one of the top 10 Toronto fashion blogs by BlogTO.
We were thrilled to talk with Alyssa about her sugar-sweet sense of style and the inspiration behind her blog.
Pink Martini: What made you decide to start a blog?
Alyssa Garrison: I had graduated journalism school but didn’t want to work at a magazine or newspaper where content is dictated by advertiser funding. I decided blogging could be a fun way to bring my dreamy, glittery world to life, so I got myself a camera and a domain and started writing.
PM: What would you say sets your blog apart from the rest?
AG: I would say the heavily curated pastel aesthetic! I call it “pastel lifestyle.”
PM: What advice do you have for aspiring fashion bloggers?
AG: Settle on an idea that truly reflects who you naturally are, and start writing. A mentor of mine once told me that if you want to be a writer, you need to be reading and writing all the time, and I think the same goes for blogging. I really live my blog, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
PM: Who do you think are the three most fashionable celebrities, current or past?
AG: Edie Sedgwick, Katy Perry, and [Parisian singer-songwriter] Petite Meller. All three have a signature look, and took/take risks.
PM: Which movies or TV shows inspire your sense of style?
AG: I’m not big on T.V. but I love movies… Marie Antoinette by Sofia Coppola would have to be my number one as far as inspiration goes. So much pastel!
PM: Which blogs do you read?
AG: WishWishWish, Design Love Fest, and Linen and Honey
PM: How would you describe your personal style?
AG: Unicorn sparkle magic, with loads of pink and a laid-back, fun vibe.
PM: What’s your number-one style commandment?
AG: Wear whatever makes you happy.
PM: What was your worst-ever fashion faux-pas?
AG: I don’t really believe in style mistakes! Again, wear whatever makes you happy, and never regret it.
PM: Which spring trend are you most excited to wear?
AG: I’m really big on head-to-toe white looks all year round, but especially when spring rolls around.
PM: Which three Pink Martini pieces would you recommend to our readers?
AG: The Daniele Top in Blue, the Dina Dress in White and the Maggie Jacket in White.
