Five fashion rules to break
There are a few fashion rules that are basically universally acknowledged – don’t wear white after Labour Day, don’t wear navy blue with black. We treat this knowledge handed down to us by our fashionable foremothers as sacred. But the thing is, a lot of these rules are actually outdated or just plain silly. While there are some fashion rules you should probably keep (like keeping your unmentionables covered in public, or not wearing dirty old jeans to a corporate meeting with a new client), you can break the ones below to your heart’s content.
Don’t wear white after Labour Day
This rule is ridiculous. Sure, white looks great under the summer sun, but it looks just as fab in fall and winter. Invest in a classic, all-season piece like our Erin Pants in White and rebel in style! The Erin Pants look great with sandals in the summer or brown leather boots in the winter.
Don’t mix prints
Mixing prints used to be the biggest faux-pas, but now more and more fashion insiders are breaking this rule. If you’re still not convinced, watch an episode of The Mindy Project. Mindy’s funky mix-and-match wardrobe, pictured below, will have you clamouring to pair plaid with spots. Check out this blog post for your complete guide to print mixing.
Always match your shoes to your purse
Maybe this rule was relevant in the era of prim, coordinating outfits, but perfectly matched accessories are not fresh or modern. For instance, instead of pairing our Serena Flat in Pink with a pink purse, try it with one in blue or even a contrasting shade of orange.
Don’t wear navy blue with black
This rule only applies with very dark shades of navy (for instance, if you were wearing a dark navy blazer with a black pencil skirt and it looked like you tried and failed to match). Navy’s a neutral, as is black, and 90% of the time they’ll look totally acceptable, maybe even great, together. Try The Coast Top in White/Navy over a pair of slim, black cigarette pants for a daringly chic look.
Don’t wear denim on denim
The “Canadian tuxedo” has recently made a comeback! Look how cool Kendall Jenner looks below:
If you’re a little timid about going full denim, try pairing two very different shades together to start. Our light-wash Samantha Shorts in Light Blue would look fab with an indigo or even black denim jacket.
