Um, has anybody else noticed that Selena Gomez has been KILLING it fashion-wise lately? In honour of the actress/singer’s newfound aesthetic, we decided to take a look back at Selena Gomez’s style evolution.
2008: Cute Disney kid
After the October 2007 premiere of Wizards of Waverly Place, Selena was catapulted to tween stardom. Her simple, cutesy outfits made her relatable to her young fans. The simple jeans and tee outfit she was spotted in while out and about (accompanied by a young Justin Bieber lookalike!) made her look like your friend from freshman homeroom. The black dress she wore to a Disney event wouldn’t have been out of place at a high-school dance. The most daring that she got with her wardrobe that year was the time she accessorized her jeans and T-shirt with a cropped vest and (perhaps ill-advised) white boots.
2009: All drapey tops, all the time
In 2009, Selena picked a silhouette and stuck with it: drapey, boho tops and jeans. Whether at a Disney event or on the street, paired with flats or heels, this was THE look of 2009 for Selena.
2010: Sparkly and sophisticated
Selena’s red-carpet style really kicked it up a notch in 2010 – for instance, she rocked a sparkly skirt at a low-key event and a showstopper of a gown at the MTV VMAs. But off-duty, she remained true to her tomboy style sensibilities. Note that this is the year she first started being spotted with Justin Bieber. (Which will either make you happy or make you want to go back in time and stop them).
2011: Grown-up and flirty
While her street style stayed totally laid-back, Selena seemed determined to show that she was a grown-up starlet when she was at events. She started gravitating toward molded bodices and provocative cut-outs on the red carpet.
2012: Majorly boho
In 2012, Selena’s already relaxed off-duty style took a turn for the boho – a few years ahead of major fashion designers. She gravitated towards hippie-inspired looks like a tie-dyed, fringed top with a maxi skirt – it doesn’t get much more boho than that! On the red carpet, she continued to exude sophistication, opting for sophisticated pieces like a crystal-embellished, long-sleeved gown.
2013: Coming into her own
Selena really began to find her own mature sense of style in 2013, taking style risks all over the place. Whether it was heart-shaped sunglasses and knee-high socks, a high-fashion cut-out dress or even a futuristic suit, this was the year we saw Selena have more fun with fashion than ever before.
2014: Bindi controversy
In 2014, Selena developed a fondness for bindis, the Indian forehead jewelry, which did not sit well with some Hindu groups, which considered it cultural appropriation. In addition to her bindis, Selena rocked some edgy, skin-baring looks.
2015: Simple and chic
In late 2014, Selena began working with celebrity stylist Kate Young. As Young told Vogue, “there’s an overall mood that we’re going for which is young, modern, clean, and sexy without ever being fussy.” Selena’s new look is all about simple pieces that make a big impact. Think effortless outfits like the one that’s been taking over Pinterest – a cropped grey sweater with a pleated midi skirt.
With Selena’s newfound sense of sophistication, we think she’d look amazing in our Roxanne Dress in Black.
