No one seems to know what to wear when it’s -25 degrees Celsius to stay warm and fashionable. One would think Google has the answer to everything, but no one seems to know what a human should wear when commuting in sub-zero temperatures. What is however easy to find, is what to wear when it’s -25 degrees Celsius and you’re camping. It’s cute that people think that’s the only event you’d ever run into freezing weather.
LADIES AND GENTLEMENT, INTRODUCING MOIRA ROSE!
Who better to accompany us on the journey to what to wear when it’s -25 degrees Celsius, than Moira Rose. Played by Catherine O’Hara in Schitt’s Creek, you simply must check it out if you have not yet. Eugene Levy plays her husband on the television series and describes her as
“Moira is an actress, ex-soap star who became a socialite, chairing major charity events around the world. But Catherine, who always brings something so creative to the table, added a very extreme affectation to her actress character that made Moira so much funnier than we had imagined her.”
Her accent alone is reason enough to watch the show. It’s a bona fide imaginary vocal component of her equivocate character. I wonder how Moira would do if the temperature dropped down to -25 degrees Celsius. Would she even leave the motel? I don’t know. If she did it would be in a very flamboyant outfit. Maybe she’s the only person who can stay super fashionable in subzero temperatures. We should all aspire to be nouveau-riche narcissists.
THE HIKING GEAR ISSUE – SOME PEOPLE JUST LEAD EVERYDAY LIFE IN COLD WEATHER
If you live in the northern part of the northern hemisphere and have to commute via public transportation no hiking gear will do. Unless you really like hiking, in which case hiking gear 1/3 out of the year might be fun for you. But not everyone wants to wear hiking gear on a regular basis.
Although it would be fun to see your lawyer or accountant rocking hiking gear at work. Do you think they’d be in better moods? Maybe an elastic waistband would make difficult decisions easier to make. I don’t know. if you’re a lawyer or accountant give it a go and let us know how it works out for you.
BASIC GUIDELINES FOR WHAT TO WEAR WHEN IT’S -25 DEGREES
Here are the three basic rules you should follow when planning what to wear when it’s 25 degrees Celsius:
- Base Layer: Moisture Management
- Mid Layer: Insulation Management
- Outer Layer: Rain, Wind and Snow Protection
1. BASE LAYER
I hear you Moira, I do not wear adhesive backing either. Thermal base layers regulate your body’s temperature. It is designed to absorb perspiration. We all know that bulking up in layers before you leave the house will lead to an inevitable break of sweat – usually restricted to one specific part of your body. It’s a strange sensation when your feet are cold as ice, but your upper body is on fire, Katniss style. Also, walking around with sweat can result in a horrid cold! What to wear when it’s -25 degrees Celsius for your base layers are a thermal top and thermal bottoms.
THERMAL TOP FOR NON-THERMAL WEATHER
A thermal top is meant to fit your body tightly. As such, you’ll limit any cold air contact. Minus 25 degrees Celsius is cold. It’ll trap the heat and boost your comfort. No one is going to see your thermal top. -25 is no time for through fashion choices. Leave that to the other layers.
If you do want to keep fashion in mind, go for an all black thermal top. It makes putting together an outfit is much easier. Go for a brand like Uniqlo, it’s more fashion forward than stores like MEC – which is outdoor sports based.
THERMAL BOTTOMS UNDER YOUR APPLE BOTTOM JEANS (NO BOOTS WITH FUR)
Look for material that is durable and soft such as synthetic materials. These fabrics include spandex, polyester, lycra, and nylon. Stay away from cotton! It is not your friend. It retains moisture which can leave you feeling cold. This is especially true for thermal tops. Most individuals sweat more from their tops, and not your bottom half. So if you have to wear cotton, put one leg in at a time. The bottom line (hah) is that thermal inner wear will protect you from the cold on a skin-to-skin level.
In terms of fashion choices, stick to the same rules as for thermal tops. The bottoms should be a part of your body, not a part of your outfit. Do go for a pair of black plain ones.
WARM DRY WOOL SOCKS
Don’t forget about your wee feet when considering what to wear when it’s 25 degrees Celsius. Your socks are just as (or perhaps more) important than your shoes! When wet, cotton loses its insulating properties. No matter how warm your shoes are if your feet are prone to sweating you will feel cold. Wool socks like merino ones are the way to go. Wool is an amazing insulator. It can absorb moisture without making your feet fell wet. Wool also dries more quickly.
Wool socks are a cute way to include a little sense of fashion into your subzero style. Pick a pair with a cute pattern if you enjoy colors and graphics. If your style is minimalistic, go for a pair of solid colored socks with an interesting texture.
2. MID LAYER
Stuck in the middle with you! This is where you can get your fashion on if you so wish. Look at yourself, you look beautiful. What to wear when it’s -25 degrees Celsius for your mid layers are a basic tee, sweater, and lined pants or jeans.
BASIC TEE OR BOHO CHIC BLOUSE
You can opt for a tee (long sleeved or short sleeves) over your thermal inner wear. This isn’t necessarily a must, but know that you definitely have the option. Switch this out for a dress shirt or a blouse.
This is where you can dip into your fashion wardrobe. Go for something with something colorful or patterns! You’re going to be wearing the same or similar things on a daily basis. Thermal innerwear and the same outerwear. This is really your place to shine.
Fleece is trending right now, so that’s something that’s definitely recommended as a mid layer. Opt for a fashionable wool sweater to complete your outfit. Polyester fleece is available in a lightweight material. it stays warm even when it’s damp.
Your sweater is another way to make a fashion statement. If you don’t want to wear a cute blouse or tee or something like that, go all out with a wool sweater, or a cardigan.
LINED PANTS OR JEANS
When considering what to wear when it’s 25 degrees Celsius, opt for a pair of stretched jeans. 100% denim jeans will be difficult to wear with a pair of thermal leggings. You won’t be able to move as freely with two layers if one of them prevents you from moving.
Keep in mind that you’ll be wearing thermal layers, but you don’t need to wear them all day. Opt for a pair of tailored trousers with a bit of a cuff. It’s a fashion statement that keeps you warm and comfortable. If you’re wearing jeans I can only encourage that they’re sized up. Otherwise, it can get a little snug.
3. OUTER LAYER
Let us get back to the warm features of your look. The features that will hide your carefully selected mid layer fashion choices. As stated previously, the outer layer should protect you from the rain and the wind. Most puffer jackets are wind and water resistant to the conditions of winter. What to wear when it’s -25 degrees Celsius for your outer layers are a winter coat and an inner jacket.
DO A WARM OUTER WINTER COAT
There are many different types of puffer coats. A coats main purpose is to keep body heat in and cold air out. Puffer jackets tend to be the warmest type of coat. You can find puffer jackets made out of feathers, recycled material of synthetic fibers as its main insulation. Puffer jackets are both designed to repel water and wind. Go for a longer jacket as it keeps you warm for longer. It’s also the more fashionable choice as far as puffer jackets come.
Did you know that the puffer jacket we all love to hate was invented in 1936 by Eddie Bauer? It was called the Skyliner. The coat had encased down feathers in quilted fabric. Bauer almost died due to hypothermia on a fishing trip, resulting in the creation of the Skyliner.
ADD AN INNER JACKET FOR EXTRA WARMTH
Go for a leather jacket or a puffier down-like inner jacket. Down insulated jackets are easy to pack – it’s both light and warm. It offers some water and rain resistance. Some light down jackets come with little bag compartments which allows you to pack it into a very small space. Therefore you can pack it up and put it in a bag before you go to work or before you leave. As such you don’t get overheated. Who knows, it might not be – 25 degrees Celsius in a few hours. The weather is pretty volatile these days. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking.
If your outer coat is warm enough, you don’t need to bother wearing an inner jacket. In the event that your outer coat is made out of wool, do yourself a favor and wear an inner jacket.
Accessories are usually the fun and experimental parts of an outfit. When it’s cold, just as the rest of your outfit, it gets more difficult to be fashionable. But fear not fellow fashionistas, it is not impossible. What to wear when it’s -25 degrees Celsius are a warm hat, scarf, water repellent bag and a pair of “Moira’s mittens.”
KEEP YOUR HEAD HIGH WITH A WARM HAT
Large amounts of heat escape from your head and feet. Therefore it is of the essence that you wear a hat. A hood helps you out with the excoriating wind, but a hat will add a heated layer of protection. At least for your forehead. Ever think about how different our foreheads are? Some have a very large surface area, whereas others don’t.
Right now the trend is leaning towards ribbed beanies. Go for a color that matches all of your outerwear needs. This does not mean that it has to be the same color as your coat or jacket. It means that is should complement it. If you’ve gone for black outerwear, try a speckled grey or moss green beanie to offset the darkness. Winter is dark enough on its own.
BUNDLE UP WITH A SCARF
Add a scarf to your look last. If you have a puffer coat with a hood and a hat, you can get away with a thinner and shorter scarf. Hey, you might not even need one! Let it be your judgment call. If you do decide to wear a scarf, make it a fashionable one! When it’s as cold as minus 25 degrees Celsius, there’s not an awful lot room to dress fashionably. Switch up your hat and scarf to something chic, and leave the funeral to the puffer jacket and ergonomic snow repellent shoe wear.
USE A WATER REPELLENT BAG
Keep in mind that if it’s – 25 degrees Celsius and it has snowed, is snowing or will snow, chances are that your bag will get wet. This is the case if you’re going to the grocery store or trying to catch the bus. You should try to go for a tote that you don’t mind getting wet or a bag that has a proper closing and a water repellent shell. Herschel has great options, and it’s trendy right now.
Grab something from Moira’s wardrobe when pondering what to wear when it’s 25 degrees Celsius. Mittens are warmer than gloves because we’re stronger together. Fingers generate greater body heat than a pair of separatist gloves. Look out for a pair of fleece-lined mittens. A pair of sleek black mittens are Moira appropriate.
5. PROTECT YOUR BODY
Humidity drops as it gets colder. Therefore your skin starts to lack moisture when it gets colder. You’re more prone to unwanted dry skin conditions. What’s more than that is heated air. Are you cold at the office? The radiator decreases the humidity even further which can cause further dehydration. This doesn’t only affect your skin when it’s -25 degrees Celsius your hair is going to take a toll also. So switch up that skincare and hair routine! What to wear when it’s -25 degrees Celsius to protect your body is lip balm, hand cream, SPF, and hair oils. And don’t forget about your vitamins!
BRING LIP BALM AND HAND CREAM
Even if you’re wearing gloves, it’s always a great idea to add extra hand cream to your daily routine. Otherwise, you might experience breakage – and that my friends, is not fun. Slab on some lotion before leaving into the cold, and once you’ve arrived for shelter.
MOISTURIZE YOUR HAIR
Let’s moisturize that hair! Don’t subject your hair to too much heat or too much shampoo. If you usually do every other day wash, switch that up to three in the winter. Use a hydrating mask once or twice a week. It’s of the essence to infuse your strands with strength and shine.
Take some time twice a week to infuse your strands with strength and shine. Use a hydrating hair mask. If you’ve found a brand whos shampoo you like, they’re likely to have hair mask in the same line.
Don’t be afraid to use hair oils. Coconut oil can seal your split ends, but it doesn’t necessarily hydrate your hair. Go for Moroccan hair oil, it’s more absorbent. If you have fine hair, too much oil will make it flat like a pancake. It’s a fine line. Life’s difficult, what can I say.
KEEP YOUR SKIN HYDRATED
There’s more to what to wear when it’s 25 degrees Celsius than clothing. SPF is as important during the winter as it is during the summer. Make sure that you switch to a thicker moisturizer during the winter. For most people, their skin gets drier during the winter. But that’s not the case for everyone. The only bikini-ready bods during winter belong to Victoria’s Secret models, and that’s really only the case because they get paid to be fit. The rest of the 99.99% of the population engage in increased comfort eating. As such, acne prone skin might break out more. Refined carbs may trigger or exacerbate acne.
POP THOSE VITAMINS
Chances are you’re not too keen to be outside in sub-zero temperatures. How are your vitamin D levels doing? As you’re not as exposed to the sun, you are likely to be deficient in vitamin D.
Can’t wait to wonder what’s to wear when it’s 0 degrees Celsius… Eeeek that’s a sad sentence right there.
